Today, the Work and Pensions Select Committee published its report on employment support for carers. ERSA provided evidence to the committee on behalf of its members and many of its key recommendations were adopted in today’s report, including strengthening Flexible Working Regulations, as well as improving the benefits system so people are not penalised for progressing in work.
Kirsty McHugh, ERSA’s CEO says:
‘ERSA warmly welcomes today’s Work and Pensions Committee report which adopts a number of ERSA’s recommendations. Many people will be carers at some point in their lives and our benefits and employment system should be equipped to cater for this.
It is therefore important that the Carer’s Allowance is reformed so people are not penalised for working more hours or progressing in work. Equally, carers must receive information on available support services and flexible working arrangements must be strengthened to help juggle different responsibilities. It is vital the government provides support to people who care for their loved ones so that they can also remain in or enter employment.’
