ABOUT THE PRINCE’S TRUST

Since The Prince’s Trust was established over 40 years ago, it has helped around 80,000 young people in Scotland. In the past few years they have supported 7,000 new participants annually, with 75% moving successfully into education, employment, or training. The Prince’s Trust is the first national youth employability partner to join with NHS Scotland to expand opportunities for young people within the health service, supporting the recruitment and retention for entry level clinical, social care, and non-clinical roles.

To ensure that young people in Scottish rural settings can easily access support, programme content has been adapted to include a delivery model that combines both online content and face-to-face engagement. Since the start of the partnership with NHS Scotland, 122 young people have completed programmes with The Prince’s Trust and 70% have gone on to gain employment with the NHS.

ABOUT GET INTO HEALTHCARE

Since October 2018, the partnership project – called Get into Healthcare – has been working with young people. Many of the participants have low self-confidence and doubt that they have the required skills or qualifications to apply for a job in the NHS.

The application process for the programme is easy and many young people initially register their interest through The Prince’s Trust Scotland Facebook page.

The next stage involves meeting staff from The Prince’s Trust who get to know each candidate and offer the option of tester engagement days to gain a better understanding of what is involved with the Get into Healthcare programme.

The scheme looks at the different roles available in the NHS, the care that is provided on different wards and the responsibilities of a healthcare support worker. There is also the opportunity to gain appropriate practical experience on the wards.

Since the pandemic, some NHS staff members have been moved to different roles that have created additional job opportunities. There is also some financial assistance for programme participants including help with childcare costs.

COMMENTS AND QUOTES

“The Prince’s Trust believes that every young person should have the opportunity to succeed. However, too many young people face barriers to fulfilling their potential.”

Hannah Kerrigan, Head of Partnerships with The Prince’s Trust

“Before the programme with The Prince’s Trust, I was a full-time mum with three children. I had lost my confidence and so I found it difficult to even consider applying for jobs. I kept thinking it was just too much for me, both financially and emotionally. When I realised that The Prince’s Trust could help me with childcare, one of my main obstacles when trying to find work, I knew that this could be my chance. The programme has changed my life.” Participant on the Get into Healthcare programme
